WE VERIFY BEFORE WE RECOMMEND

Research that goes straight to the field

New technologies, products, and crop varieties hit the market every season. Premium Ag believes in testing them ourselves in the conditions our growers actually farm in before putting them into a recommendation. We don’t relay product claims, we verify them on southern Alberta soil.

Since 2003, Premium Ag has conducted field-scale research across our clients’ acres, from variable seed rate trials by topography to micro-nutrient verification on cereal and canola and compost application studies. Our research scientist, Gurdeep Singh Hehar (M.Sc., Auburn University), leads projects spanning machine learning for zone delineation, drone-based multispectral crop stress analysis, and variable-rate technology validation, all funded by Premium Ag and RDAR (Results Driven Agriculture Research).

As the research questions grew more complex, so did the need for controlled, replicated, small-plot trials with full statistical rigour. That’s why we built MAG Research.

MAG Research - where agronomy meets data science

MAG Research is Premium Ag’s sister company, now in its third year of operation, dedicated to managed small-plot field trials out of Strathmore, Alberta. Where Premium Ag runs field-scale trials on grower acres, MAG provides the controlled, replicated studies that deliver statistical clarity and defensible results.

Every trial follows a protocol-first approach, from plot setup through calibrated harvest to final data delivery. Combined with drone monitoring, fully automated lab equipment, and soil and tissue testing, MAG captures performance data at every layer of the crop system. The team brings deep Alberta-specific expertise in prairie growing conditions, soil types, and regional pest and disease pressures that meaningfully affect trial outcomes.

Founded by Matt Gosling, Andrew Clements, Gurdeep Hehar, and Amelia Clements, the same team behind Premium Ag — MAG Research bridges the gap between agronomy and advanced data science, delivering research that’s both statistically valid and practically relevant for western Canadian growers.
